Creating Accessible Infographics, Org Charts, or Maps

Class Description:

We walks you through accessibility barriers that exist in either infographics, org charts, and/or maps. Our approach to mitigating accessibility barriers in each differs slightly, and three hours is typically only long enough to dive deep into a total of three complex visual assets.

Attendees will learn the benefits and shortcomings of each design program (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Adobe Illustrator, and InDesign) and how to choose the best program for the desired user experience. We will cover Adobe PDF remediation and testing methodologies for infographics, org charts, and/or maps using NVDA and JAWS and how those experiences can differ.

Be prepared to expand your thought process on what it means to present an accessible infographic, org chart, and/or map. Attendees will learn advanced techniques that capitalize on alt-text properties to develop processes for better user experiences for complex informational driven visual assets.

• Understanding the WCAG: Color Contrast Minimums (WCAG 1.4.3) and The Use of Color Only (WCAG 1.4.1)
• Choosing an accessible color palette and the pitfalls of a non-compliant one
• Colorblind friendly design methodologies
• Design software and program shortcomings
• Color tools for accessibility you need to have
• Do’s and Don’t of modifying existing colors to meet accessibility standards
• Simple modifications to make your infographic, org chart, and/or map more accessible and easier to remediate
